CBD is a legal cannabinoid which is extracted from hemp plants and can be sold in the UK.
Firstly, lets be clear on the law surrounding Cannabis or Marijuanna.
Cannabis is currently a controlled drug as classified by the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.
The Misuse of Drugs Regulations Act 2001 is a follow-up to this law. It places Cannibis under Schedule 1, which is the category for substances with no medicinal value.
Cannabis plants are made up of well over 100 different cannabinoids, which have different impacts on the body and are concentrated to different extents in certain parts of the plant.
The most popular or notorious of these are THC and CBD.
CBD vs THC
THC is the psychoactive cannabinoid compound that creates the feeling of being “high”, as sought after by recreational users of Cannabis or Marijuanna.
Note: the CBD compound does not create the feeling of being “high”.
Most cannabinoids are controlled substances under the Misuse of Drugs Act. However, CBD – or cannabidiol as it is sometimes known as – is not a controlled substance.
Hemp is legal in the UK
In the United Kingdom (UK) industrial hemp may be grown under licence which can be applied for, from the Home Office.
Hemp is a strain of the cannabis or marijuana plant that contains little or no THC, but does contain CBD.
For a hemp plant or products derived from hemp to be acceptable or legal, the Home Office says that it can contain a maximum THC content of 0.2% and that the THC must not be easily separated from it.
Note: All products sold on CBD Book are 100% legal.
Industrial hemp is widely used for things such as building materials and clothing.
Medical and Health Benefit Claims
CBD oil has been thought to have some medicinal properties, including relieving inflammation, pain relief and reducing anxiety, although there have not been conclusive scientific studies on this.
Regardless of the above, there have been numerous claims about people’s experiences of taking CBD featured in the news and all over the internet.
In 2016, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said that CBD products, if advertised for these medical purposes, needed to be licensed, however, the products can still be sold as long as claims are not made about their medical benefits.
